And yet neither generates the actual candidates. We have the parties themselves to blame for giving us the same crap evert four years to choose from.

Because the Media has become an entity into itself. Heads of papers and television use their media control to influence the vote their way. Since most of them are liberal Democrats that is why the Democrats get a free ride a lot in the press. Media's number one concern is THEIR right of saying or printing whatever they feel like, whether it is true or false. The Democrats are the ones that support the liberal Freedom of Speech so the Media loves the Dems! Media cares not for what the people think, just what can sell the news. Therefore, they support the candidates that will sell the most media to the people. Like I always say, Politics has become a $$$$$ game! Money talks people, like it or not.

I suspect you will still vote for your favorite candidate no matter who reports what. I wouldn't think people would vote for someone just because the media says they are ahead but I could be wrong about that.

Your final comment....you thought wrong.
The press, radio and television, with their messages and incessant outreach to the people, is a good gauge of what the country's priorities are. The dominant media, whether corporate or state controlled, project the acceptable paradigms and the expected behavior patterns of the populace. Out of allegiance to the system in power, and its own self interest, the media control the messages that they project. Governments control the media directly, and through corporate proxies masquerading as agents of free media. When corporations become the government, or vice versa, the free media becomes the state-controlled media. It matters not whether it's Pravda, The New York Times, Granma, or FOX, the modus operandi is the same, i.e., to protect, defend, and advance the status quo and the dominant economic and political paradigm.

Actually, more Journalists have offered up their own money to the campaigns of Obama (for the Dems) and McCain (for the Republicans) than any other candidates:
http://fundrace.huffingtonpost.com/neighbors.php?type=occ&occ=Homemaker&search=Search
Now, that is THEIR OWN money... not the corporations that buy their articles and research... there is a difference.
Furthermore, I have not heard one good thing about Huckabee from a real person... it's all mainstream media for him.
And I don't know what channel you are watching but poor McCain has not had any positive coverage in the mainstream for quite some time.

The media is bought and paid for, plain and simple. They portray all events to satisfy their agendas and fill their pockets. Good news does not sell, neither does candidates that are reasonable.

The media's jobs is to tell you what their corporate sponsors and owners want you told, nothing more.
Just because a journalist makes a story, doesn't mean the news agency has to run it. Many journalists write far more stories, than ever reach the public.

Are you just now figuring out that the mainstream media has a "control" factor involved?
They make the news. They don't report anything except the pointless train wreck human interest sensationalist crap.
When it comes to real news, they take their talking points from the boss.

Because the media is full of smug elitists that think they know what's best for us. For the record my choice for the republicans would be Thompson or Hunter. Huckabee is a conservative democrat pretending to be a republican.
