Most effective non-chemical drain cleaner is compressed air, they sell a Drain Blaster under 30 dollars, also canned air at the home store, but the drain blaster will last a long time.

You can unplug just about any fixture drain with a plunger and in some cases you need a wet rag too. You use the wet rag to try to block the force of air that the plunger produces from coming out of the over flows.
Toilets some times if you can control the fill valve you can fill the bowl up to the rim and the weight of the water will eventually force the blockage down.
I normally do these things. Never have ever bought any kind of drain cleaner.
Clean the strainers and mechanical plugs on your sink and tub periodically

a) Sometimes I bring in the hose from outside, and have my mom turn it on full blast. Works great for the bathtub drain.
b) For the sink drain, I snake the stackpipe. You can buy the snake at OSH or the equivalent home hardware retail store.

We put baking soda down followed by vinegar. It foams up and then we run hot water till it clears away. It's rare we do anything else~~unless desperation sets in. Then it is Liquid Plummer with foam.
