Honestly, I don't think there is any one paper that's better (in terms of being more editorially objective or unbiased) than the rest.
The New York Times is probably the most prominent and the most widely read, and I've heard a lot of people refer to it as the standard by which all other national papers are measured. That said, it's fallible (see Jayson Blair) and it has a distinctly liberal editorial slant.
I read three newspapers on a daily basis-- the Wall Street Journal (which has a conservative editorial slant) the New York Times (liberal editorial slant) and my local newspaper. Between the three I think I get a fairly balanced perspective. I would recommend the same thing to you. Also, you can check the AP wire daily online, which will cost you nothing. It updates regularly-- sometimes every few minutes:

I also recommend that you listen to NPR and watch C-Span, when you have time. NPR is one of the last great bastions of free and independent broadcast journalism. It isn't entirely unbiased (nothing is, as I'm sure you know) but they do a remarkable job of trying to balance the perspectives presented on their programs.
Similarly, Brian Lamb of C-Span is one of the very best journalists living today. He is unobtrusive and objective to a fault. In fact, he's so objective that I have no idea what his personal political beliefs are. He never gives any indication.
I wish you luck in your career-- you're clearly a competent writer, and I applaud your desire for balance and objectivity in an industry that often displays neither (I work in the media too).

your best bet is to vary your news intake. i would suggest setting up RSS feeds for four or five national papers.
i'm a senior journalism major in indiana — editor in chief for the Ball State Daily News. i've set up a google reader page. if you don't know what that is, it's a feature you can use with a gmail account (if you don't have one, get one!) google readers a tab at the top of gmail and is fairly reader friendly. i get feeds from the washington post, NYT, st. pete times, BBC world and BBC americas (to get an outside perspective) and many others. you can also put in fun sites you check or less timely news sources, like Time or U.S. News and World Report.
Hope this helps!

Christian Science Monitor. Don't let the name scare you. They only devote one page a day to any religious article. The link below is to their web edition. But, they only publish during the week.
