Yankee Doodle "put a feather in his hat and called it Macaroni." Back in colonial times, macaroni referred to Italian, that is, he stuck the feather in his hat in an attempt to look like a stylish Italian. The British used Yankee Doodle to poke fun of the colonists as uncouth bumpkins.
