It's a question of beauty being in the eye of the beholder. Daisies don't spread NEARLY as fast as dandelions, either, so they don't get out of control as dandelions do, but ultimately, a weed is just a plant that's just out of favor for the moment :-)

A weed is just a plant that people don't want to be growing in a certain place.
I think dandelions are one of the most versatile plants out there. The leaves can be made into a salad, the flowers can be battered and eaten. The root can be dried, ground up, and used as a coffee substitute (tastes just like coffee!) and it also has several herbal properties.
Now wouldn't you rather have a yard full of dandilions than daisies? People should be enjoying free salads instead of spending hours of hard effort and using dangerous chemicals to remove them. As I always say, "If you can't beat it, eat it!"

A weed is just any plant that grows where you don't want it. Some folks grow dandelions to use their greens for salads and cooking. In that case a daisy or even a rose growing in that plot would be a weed.

You have a lot of good ansers here. It is true. A weed is a plant that grows where it is not wanted. If people had a clue about the value of the dandelion they would stop 90% of the chemical weed control they use.

If people understood it's value, it would be on the endangered list. Europeans brought it with them because it is a highly valued plant. Sorry so few realize it.
So glad for the following post by Grannygrunt. Excellent links. Thank you. If this comes to a vote, you get mine.

Either people just like daisies better, or dandelions are more invasive. I've seen massive fields where you can't even see the grass through the dandelions, and I hardly ever see daisies, because they're so small.

Dandelions are generally considered weeds because they are very invasive- their seeds will quickly sprout in a lawn. They are very hard to remove. Daisies spread far slower and they can more easily be removed from places they are not wanted.
