I'm 34 weeks pregnant with our first. I started to have contractions at around 32 weeks and the doc gave me some medicine to stop the contractions when I'm having them. The baby is a very healthy boy that weighs 6.5 pounds. Anyway, I'm just wondering if having sex with my hubby puts me at a higher risk for going into labor?

It was terbutaline. He instructed me to take them when I have contractions for at least an hour. He did say to slow down and take it easier. He said bedrest isn't very effective in my circumstances, and he didn't say anything about sex.

If you have been given meds to stop contractions, then yes, having sex would irritate the cervix and uterus and could stimulate preterm labor.

Did your doctor not give you instructions on limiting activities or put you on bedrest for your preterm labor? You should call them and ask for clarification if they did not. I have never heard of a doctor prescribing meds (is it terbutaline?) to stop contractions and NOT put you on some kind of restrictions including no intercourse.

Depends on who you ask - some people will tell you that the semen will help dilate the cervix, but tell that to a woman who went past due with both and had more sex that she ever thought she could, hoping it would induce labor! :) (Gotta love my life!) I wouldn't worry about having sex with your husband right now - just go for it, as long as it isn't hurting you. And if you go into labor now, your baby is healthy and it's just time for him to make his appearance! :)

Actually yes sex will induce labour and if you are already having contrations then I would abstain. These next 6 weeks are the last weeks for growth and development and the biggest thing you need to worry about really are his lungs try to keep him in for as long as possible.

Good Luck

Not realllly.. Orgasms (yours) can potentially bring on uterine contractions, but because of your situation.. you should ask your doctor about this. Normally, women are allowed to have sex until their water breaks, but if you have had early labor.. the doctor needs to tell you whether or not you can have sex.

Sex is supposed to help start labor, so I imagine it could. You might want to be on the safe side and wait until you could talk to your doctor. As much as that stinks......

I agree will Jill concerning meds and activity. Your doctor is being paid good money for services. That includes answering questions.

I guess if your going to have sex tonight be very careful. As my doctor said to me " Don't be bangin to hard" The first time a doctor has told me that one.
