I'm 16 weeks pregnant. I have been having bad pains in my back all day. It is only on the right side of my back. Sort of in the middle but low middle. It isn't a horrible pain (about a 6 on a 1-10 scale), but nothing I do helps it. I've tried tylenol, a heating pad, different positions, etc. It won't ease up and I cannot get comfortable. Today I have also been having sharp pains shooting up through my vaginal area. I'm not sure if the two are related or not, but I'm so afraid something is wrong. My doctor is closed right now of course and I have to work later tonight. Should I go to the hospital now or wait until Monday morning to call my doc?

By the way, with my last pregnancy, my water broke at 16 weeks so I'm extremely nervous about everything.

I'm seeing a high risk specialist so I don't want to call him for something that isn't an emergency.

It could be a lot of things. But, that sounds an awful lot like the feelings I was having when I had a kidney infection with my first pregnancy. That would explain the side pain and the vaginal pain.

My thought is always, if you are at all concerned, go to the hospital. Worst case scenario, they send you home saying you're fine. But, if it is a kidney infection, you don't want to mess around with that.

I understand your being nervous about everything. I wish you luck.

Phone your doc. Theres nothing more important than your babys health and they will understand that. I miscarried at 13 wks and with my second pregnancy I went into the docs with every little twinge, they got sick of the sight of me I think, but they will understand. Especially with a 1st pregnancy you don't know whats going on and from my experience they are happy to do that. Happier than if you didn't go in and you were sitting worried all night. Let them reassure you becos 99% of the time it is absolutely fine. Twinges and pain are normal. Serious and very prolonged pain is not normal but if it is a 1st pregnancy twinges and pain can be taken as some sort of prob. Let me assure you its all the norm.If its getting really painful fone you doc striaght away, if its a miscarridge theres nobody, not even the docs can stop it. Miscarridge happens in 1 out of 3 pregnancys. its not uncommen. Believe me, the majority of 1st time pregnant women think they are having a miscarridge at some point in their pregnancy but they are not, dont worry, DO NOT WORRY. And All the best with you baby.xxx

This sounds like something I would get checked out. But, I can understand if you don't want to "waste" a trip to the hospital, especially if you live far away. I would suggest calling the hospital and asking to speak to a doctor or nurse in the new life unit. They can give you advice as to whether you can wait until Monday or if you should go to the ER.

If the pains are worrying you go to the hospital. Especially since you have a history of early labor. Besides you wont be able to work tonight with pains, especially if your worried about it. If you have a private doctor they should have an answering service that can page him or whoevers on call in his office. Then you could ask him what he thinks.

Your doctor should have an answering service, and you should be able to page him or leave him a message. So call him now.

You have no idea if this is an emergency or not. It is not up to you to determine. If you're going to a high risk specialist, it's because you're high risk, and they're probably used to alot of phone calls! Call them NOW.

I think you should go to the hospital now (or at least soon), especially since your water broke so early last time.
