Wellp my future wife is a Feminist (which I dont mind at all) and she has let me know that she wants to keep her last name. So then a compromise is in order for me. I want both of us to have the same last name, So I'm changing mine to hers. Is the process for changing my last name different for a woman getting married in the State of California?

After a couple responses I'm gonna have to ask you to please just tell me the process. I don't have to change anything! She would be happy if we kept both of our names, but it is I who want to have the same name. I've spent 5 years of my life learning Japanese....It took a considerable amount of time for me to be accepted into this culture to begin with! I had to prove I wasn't the average sex crazed white guy they see on American Television. I feel honored to have my wifes father allow me to take his name after his blessing. I had to earn this. So please I was just asking for the protocol. As for wearing the pants? LOL first of this isn't your average american relationship. We are both martial artists, and I am normally quite stubborn. We want to wed in the United States. Hyphenating is not an option with us, so please spare me with the personal attacks about the pants wearing. She's considered to be a feminist in the eyes of the Japanese. I merely used to term to Translate to englis

First relinquish your balls. Then make sure your apron is straight. Don't walk but skip down to the court house. Make sure you don't forget to put a copy of the marriage certificate in your purse.

Sorry, I couldn't help it.

It's obvious that you are bending over backwards to please your future wife. However, if there is no compromise there is little hope that you will get to ever wear the pants in the family and she will always make every decision for you.

So what do you do to compromise? Both of you pick a last name that you both want, so both will change their name, and both will show good faith in compromise.
I would suggest an anagram with both names used. ie: Smith and Jones would be "Jonith". To have her name first here won't be a lack of manliness. "THAT'S Compromise!

Your idea to switch to her name is not a compromise but a total collapse of compromise. Now, if there were another reason, like you have a criminal record, creditors hounding, and the such, it won't matter. Sooner or later the name change will trickle down to everyone. 2 Months at best.

Kudos for bending over backwards to please your wife! Just don't bend so far backwards your head goes up your #%@*&!

As far as I know, it shouldn't be any different. You'll first have to start out with taking your marriage certificate to the Soc. Sec. office and getting a new card with your new name on it. Then to the DMV, and then starts the process of changing your bank account and all that. As long as you get your Social Security Card changed you should have no problem.

so why are you getting married that was the whole idea right sharing & compromise? whatever to each their own. It works the same way if you follow traditions, the wife takes the husband's last name, carries on the fathers family name.
you can take her name the same way.... paperwork paperwork. It's just a name right?
BTW I'm just curious what kind of wedding are you having?

Man your dad is going to be pissed! This is how the family name continues if you ever have children. It is basically the same process once you have the marriage license you can start getting your id changed etc. Congrats and Good luck.

It won't be any different.

Anyway, I don't agree with it for me. I loved taking on my husbands last name and I'm pretty feminist. Then again, he is, too. It's all about respect for women's rights. Don't men have any rights either, though? Jeez- she should take your last name. That's kinda crappy to me.

Should be the same process. You should be proud of what are doing. You are thinking for yourself. God forbid you should oppose the hive mind. Those who are against you are primitive and mired in traditions that make people miserable when they are blindly followed.
