We saw a large object leaving a flaming trail heading towards earth and were trying to figure out if it was an asteroid or shuttle reentry, etc.

Officially, currently there's no recently actively space shuttle mission. Unofficially, who knows.

There are plenty of orbiting space junks, but they are small and not as big as a space shuttle. On the other hand, a relatively recent discarded rocket stages might be still big enough to be visible.

space.com have some list of official recent launches, but they are usually silent regarding unofficial ones.

As for asteroids or comets.

Well, again, space.com have some list of official recent asteroids/comets entering Earth's atmosphere, but again they are usually silent regarding unofficial ones.

Not an asteroid, or we probably wouldn't still be around. Not a space shuttle, as none are currently in orbit. Probably a fireball (natural meteor) or deorbiting space junk. The latter usually move more slowly than meteors, about the speed of an orbiting satellite or a little faster,

The space shuttle does not leave a trail, nor does it re-enter as fast as a meteor. You probably saw a meteor,(lucky you), and it may be reported in local papers or Sky & Telescope.

relies upon on how vast it quite is. If that's the dimensions of a automobile, not lots will take place. If that's the dimensions of a soccer field, the area it hits will probable be destroyed. If it quite is a pair miles or so in diameter, that'll probable be the tip of mankind.
