If we are bad people, addicted people, violent people, etc., it's best if we do everything in our power to change for the better. Happy Holidays!

Sometimes when we are trying to do things in a better way it feels a little strange until it becomes familiar. The self you are talking about isn't a static thing anyhow. Change happens as a result of the things that happen to us. Choosing those experiences for ourselves will only result in psychological damage if you choose destructive rather than beneficial things or if you try to be other than you really are, deep down inside.

The mere fact that you know that you want to change is the first step. Do what makes you happy. Go and see the things that you want too. Ever watch TV and say boy i would like to go there! Think about it...What is stopping you from doing it.
Answer: You are.
You think that this is the way you have to behave, the way you have to live, act ,feel....Its not.
Try this sometime. The moment you have a thought about doing something(As long as its not a bad thought please!) just do it.
Ya know you wake up in the morning and think i would rather sleep in today...DO IT. Or perhaps you are sitting watching TV and its raining but you want to take a walk...DO it anyway. You will feel so free just because you are acting on your needs. DO WHAT YOU WANT WHEN YOU WANT and you will feel so free!

I don't think I can understand change outside normal reality. Life in actuality is perpetual change, it never stops changing. Will has very little to do with it until it has developed intellect to harbor the competency for it. Self change without gaining some competence for it is insanity, or at least incompetency.

The Erikson life-stage virtues, in the order of the stages in which they may be acquired, are:

hope- Basic Trust vs. Mistrust
will- Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
purpose- Initiative vs. Guilt
competence- Industry vs. Inferiority
fidelity- Identity vs. Role Confusion
love (in intimate relationships, work and family)- Intimacy vs. Isolation
caring- Generativity vs. Stagnation
wisdom- Ego Integrity vs. Despair

as long as you are alive, your life will change. think about it: you change from a baby to an adult; you change and grow as you experience different things in life. it has nothing to do with lying.

here's an example of change. if you were born 12 or more years ago -- back then, there was no Internet -- then you have evolved along with technology. there was a time when even cell phones didn't exist -- DVD's -- even something as simplistic as a microwave oven. you changed your behavior, as all of these things were born, by their mere presence alone. Everyone changes. it's apart of evolution in all its many forms.

Innate values, morals and ethics will not change. As we grow and evolve, change is inevitable. A constant in life is change. If we have learned something, we have changed. The loss of a loved one changes us. New points of view give us pause and we can change. Don't be fearful, embrace all that life has to offer. You have free will to pick and choose. Blessings on you.

No.. Changing is a natural part of life. What is wrong is changing yourself because other people want you to change. Now THAT is wrong. Change is good if it makes you a better person. For example, a drug addict changing into an active and beneficial member of society. Is that bad?

It is my personal belief that some characteristics in people are ingrained, and will never change.

But we are always changing, whether we like it or not. You cannot hide from life. It will evolve and erode you whether you want it to or not. It is not wrong to change, I think, because it is inescapable. It is all around us, all the time.

We are ourselves deep down, but the surface characteristics, habits, hobbies - they will change over time. But our deeply ingrained personalities will always, in some shape or form, remain the same.

Yes...you changed from an infant who could not wipe or feed yourself. Then you evolved into a toddler and young kid who had a change to puberty yes psychologically damaging to be between half man half adult. Then Marriage, Fatherhood, and work. It is not wrong to change but it happens and no we don't always like it.

You're not the same person you were yesterday. We are continually changing. It is when we try to define ourselves as who we used to be that we run into psychological problems.
