Hey, you ppl think by the year 2012-2014 there will be a mission to mars?

I heared in The Science Channel that they will be going before the year 2014 and in CNN hey also said it. Also i had a speaker at my school last year that works for NASA, and he said that by the year 2012-2013 they will be going to Mars no doubt about it. I bealive that they are, since we have the technology to get there already. And by the stuff ive seen and heard.

What do you think?

Tham153.. ur wrong. They said they will have a manned mission to mars by those years 2012-2014. That will last about 6 months to get there. not sure about how long but about.

Tham is not wrong. There is no plan to send a manned craft to Mars by that time. You don't have to like it, but that won't make it happen.

I don't know who said this--but they are wrong. There areno plans (beyond feasibility studies) for a manned mission to Mars in the forseeable future.

Currently, NASA is struggling to get the funding for a small replacement for the shuttle--and that's not slated to fly until 2015. Further--you mentioneed a 6-month trip time. NASA does not have a spacecraft---even under development--to reach Mars in tha tshort a time.

There are unmanned missions planned for Mars in tha ttime frame--ut not manned ones.

This unfortunate--because the necessary technology to mount a Mars mission does exist. However, even if Congress were to committ the funds, years of underfunding hae taken their toll. NASA simply does not have the resources, even under the best of circumstances, to launch a manned Mars expedition in tha tshort a time.

We will reach Mars--eventually. But we will be lucky if we manage a return to the Moon by 2020, much less a Mars mission.

I would think so. We are getting smarter as minutes tick by, so I have no doubt. Our technology (as you said) has been improving so much, I think we'll have a rather safe trip there. I believe we already sent a machine up there, so it will be a matter of time before man steps foot on Mars. It's going to be exciting news!!!

No, they have to retire the space shuttle first, then iron out all the bugs in the new "constellation" space system.

Then they have to fight over who is going first and what to take, how much stuff to leave behind, what to say to the media, not to mention the taxpayers, but most of all, a vast army of consultants and committee members must draft up copy to be left on a little metal memento to be left at the first landing site.

oh yes this is going to happen in the near future. but thing that worries me is how long it will take to get there. ?? i have heard it will take six months to get there. and another 6 months to get back? but suppose something goes wrong?? then what?? so t here are a lot of things to figure out!! right. But as smart as those people are in nasa i am sure they will find a way.

Not a manned mission. But maybe another unmanned mission.

The ultimate goal of terra-forming mars and creating colonies is a fallacy.
