It is interesting to see all the different answers to this question. It seems both parties are having an identity crisis. I live in Repub territory, and disagree with with the basic philosophy in large part, but do not consider myself a bona fide Dem either. I mainly don't like the implication that if you are a Christian, you must be a Republican. Or if you believe in family values you cannot be a Democrat. If you believe too many generalizations, or listen to too much rhetoric from either side, it will have your head spinning. Repubs represent big business, Dems support social and environmental programs. The middle class has to decide which party will help them most within a given historical time. Both parties are obligated to whoever contributes the most to their campaigns. So, you have to look at not only basic philosophies, but who is holding the puppet/purse strings. BTW, birdsnakecat's answer is typical crap spouted by neo con Republicans of the particularly hateful persuasion. Just as many Democrats are hard working and pay taxes, so what he says is a fallacy.

Actually, the majority of republicans and democrats are actually moderates and ride the fence trying to get the votes from both sides, and not actually aligning themselves with one specific party.

Democrats are on the liberal side of the fence for the most part. They favor gun control, abortions for a modern example. They also favor a strong centralized government.

As for your Republicans they are the conservatives. They oppose the abortions and gun control. They also support state rights.

It is important to understand that there isn't a liberal or a conservative, by definition, running for office. They just tend to sit on one side of the fence more often. I

I find retrograde's answer to be hilarious. he talks about the republicans beating their chests for war but never mentions Bill Clintons war. Let's do thatThis is a side by side comparison of Bush's and Clinton's war.
Who did we fight?
Bush......our enemies
Clinton.........our allies
Went to Un first to try to resolve it without war.
Bush yes
Clinton no
Went to Congress for approval
Bush yes.got majority of dems
Clinton.no
Both claimed mass killings and graves. Mass graves found
Bush yes
Clinton no
Used smart bombs to limit civilian casualities
Bush yes
Clinton no
Carpet bombed cities
Bush no
Clinton yes (His failure to fully fund the defense department left us drastically short on smart bombs and cruise missles)
Country where our soldiers are caught in the middle of a real civil war
Iraq no (not yet)
Bosnia yes (Oh you didn't know our troops are still there? Can you say "redeployment?)
Billions spent on war
Bush yes
Clinton yes (cruise missles while Clinton was president were approx. 250,000 apiece)And we are still there 11 years later.
End of our presence in sight
Iraq no
Bosnia no
Clinton lied......people died

the same as Conservative and Labour.. ie OLD Labour... not this shower we have in Govt here at the moment who, thanks to Tony Bliar(sic)'s media spin decided to change tradition and try and fool the people into believing that there were 2 vastly different political parties...by calling the Labour Party (as was) New Labour !!! whereas, in actual fact, thans to Tony Bliar(sic) he turned OLD Labour - who's values were FOR the ORDINARY people - into a branch of the Conservatives - whose values are FOR the rich people, designed to keep Joe and Jane Public in thier place... working to keep them in a lifestyle they have become accustomed to !

Rebublican - Conservative
Democrat - New Labour !!

No real difference I guess - give each and every politician is out solely for his/her OWN gains. !

It used to be that Democrats saw the value in gov't programs and not the cost while Republicans saw the cost in gov't programs and not the value. Now though reps see neither the value or the cost and dems see both the cost and value.

Not a heck of a lot anymore. But basically Republicans like to beat their chest and start unnecessary wars. These wars have to be paid by our children and grandchildren because Republicans don't pay for their wars. Debt is a favorite of "conservatives".

Pretty much just domestic issues, both social (abortion, gay marriage) and fiscal (taxes, spending) issues seperate them.

Too retro: And the majority of democrats didn't vote for the very same war???? Get a clue!
