i have both, and it depends on your personal preference. Strats have longer fretboards, so your fingers have to stretch a little more to hit the same notes.
Also, Les Pauls have humbucking pickups, while strats have single-coil pickups. The single-coil pickups sound brighter but thinner, while the humbuckers have a thicker, but not as bright sound. The single-coils also are a bit noisier, in terms of when your plugged into an amp...they create a buzz sound, while Les Pauls are much quieter.
Les Pauls are easier to play because their fretboards are shorter. Actually, strats fretboards are longer than most other guitars out there, so they aren't as easy to play in terms of fingers reaching notes.
Also, Les Pauls neck is part of the body, so the sustain is longer. Sustain is the amount of time a note vibrates when its picked. The strats neck is bolted on, so the overall mass of the guitar is compromised, and the notes don't have as much sustain.
But it is personal preference. I like both, for different reasons, its almost like comparing apples and oranges.
some famous players:
Les Paul: Slash, Zakk Wylde, Jimmy Page
Stratocaster: Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Yngwie Malmsteen

Stratocaster is better for rock than Les Paul, this is from my experience as I had both a long time back when I used to play the guitar. But to get them in your price range will be difficult. Now there are plenty of copies equally good in the electronics so the sound is similar, but if you can get a original nothing like it.

A true Fender Srat or a real Les Paul will cost you more than 400, but a lot of knock-offs are good, like a Slammer. What you really need to do is get a good set of strings .I find that lightwieght rock n roll strings are easy on the fingers and easy to bend. A wow and a fuzz pedal will let you play like Jimi and make your guitar more versatile. Good Luck..rock on

I would get the Epiphone G-400 at $399! I have one & it is definitely worth the money!! Great sound, great looks & is of very good quality! Sod those cheap Fender guitars....I don't have an issue with Fender guitars but this Epiphone is worth more than the price!! The Epiphone Les Paul Standard is also a great guitar but about a $100 out of your price range!!

An RG321MH, that was my first and I loved it. It almost never goes out of tune, has a decent tone. I would consider getting it. Also, it solely depends on your style about the stratocaster/les paul deal. Very hard to compare, les pauls have humbuckers... strats have single coil pickups. I would personally pick a les paul over stratocaster, but again... it's preference!

For a beginner (I'm assuming you are one), the most important consideration should be the "action." This means, the height of the strings above the guitar neck; or how easily they can be pushed down to the neck. More beginners quit because their fingers are just too tender and they have a guitar with bad action. You do NOT have to spend a bundle of $$ to find good action. There are very cheap guitars on the market that may not have the highest power pickups, but the action is quite good. Go to a reputable music store and ask them to show you the best action they have in your price range. You can always buy a better guitar, but make it easy on yourself as a beginner.

Well, I have a squier stratocaster, but since I'm a beginner, it's great for me. If you've got a few years in, you should buy a fender strat. They start at around 400.

I have seen this exact SAME QUESTION asked at least 10 times in the last day... why don't you just check the archives to see how this question was answered the LAST 1000 times it was asked?
The answer doesn't change... it's the guitar the FEELS RIGHT to you... there is NO answer because it's all subjective.

Yamaha Starcaster. Good brand, Ibanez and Fender are great to but I don't think those would be under 400 bucks
