There's nothing bad aboud DELLs. There always will be people who have troubles or bad experience with any brand, including Dell.

I've been through dozens of Dell machines, including laptops, desktops and servers, and can't say anything bad about them in general. On the contrary, I've had more bad experiences with other brands.

The Ford analogy is pretty good, because Dell machines are very common and you can get replacement parts easily. I can get a Mercedes, but if I only drive once a week to do grocery shopping, Ford works just fine for that purpose.

Computers of all brands break. Dell computers break and HP computers break and Toshiba computers break and Macs break too. That does not make the brand bad. Other things do. Phone support may be an issue for some people, but I don't see it being much worse at Dell compared to other companies.

Dell offers good value for the money, in my opinion.

Every company big and small has their vocal detractors that have had a bad experience. Personally, I have no experience with Dell so I can't say one way or another but I have spoken to their senior staff at a conference.

I either build my own desktop systems or buy Lenovo/IBM Thinkpads -- because the service/support is great. I can fix all of my desktop stuff and Lenovo supports me out of Atlanta, Georgia (and I speak Atlantian). They bend over backwards to make my problems go away without a lot of hassle.

Is Dell any different? Well, unless you're a corporate customer or pay extra, you're going to be supported out of India or somewhere other than the US. Personally, I would pay the extra $$ to get local support. Is their hardware any better/worse? Well, consider that most companies make their systems out of roughly the same parts. Big companies buy in bulk so they have to be thoroughly tested before they get shipped. Most are made in China. Nope, they're about the same.

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com

It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

I'm a technician for a company who uses hundreds of Dell's, any fixing of them is mostly down to user created errors,I own a Dell which has had no problems and all the staff also own Dell's.

We had one bring a laptop back that had lost one of the Drivers, that's it!

Dell had problems a few years back but things have changed.

I've had my Dell for 2 and a half years...it's only broken down once and the part was covered under warranty so I didn't even have to pay anything (though dealing with customer service was a pain in the buttocks) I LOVE my Dell.

I've heard some bad things about them, but my mom has a dell dimension xps which actually hasnt had to many problems... she has had it for about 5 years and its still goin fine...

I built a custom computer... although it was cheaper and the specs where better than her xps it only lasted a year before the motherboard went out.

I've got one, but would never buy another one. The computer isn't bad, but their customer service is abominable. I was on the phone with a Dell technician---In India___ for 5 1/2 hours. Nothing was resolved and I had to call another computer person to come in and fix it.. By the way, Her name was Teena. Yeah, right.

Dells are mass produced from the cheapest parts that can be bought. They're cheap computers, so you do the math. I'm the owner of a small computer repair business, and I won't work on a Dell or an E-Machines.
