My disc seems to make more noise and the fan also seems louder. Not the soft humm, but more whining and grinding. Is there easy maintance to solve this or should I be getting nervous?

It might be the fan which is easy to replace. If its the hard drive this too is not that difficult to do. Just look inside your computer and see if it might need a cleaning. The fan simply unplugs and pulls out. The hard drive is similar, you can see the connections in the back. Just gingerly replace when pluging back in. Hope its just a cleaning!

You may need to clean all the vents especially the fan vents with an air duster (can of compressed air).

It is possible that your fan(s) has failed or is running slow – might need replacing.

Switch off, unplug and clean inside as well. Do this outside of the building because you will be surprised how much dust & dirt has accumulated.

Get nervous. This might be something as cheap as a burned out fan bearing or as expensive as a hard drive about to bite the dust. Get everything backed up to external media and go looking for the noise.

I use a plastic "wand" that I can put to my ear and touch to the suspect device (fan, drive etc.). This helps isolate the sound.
