Its what you do, not what you say. tell her you are there for her. support her. don't treat her differently. she doesn't want that. treat her like you always have. show her that you care for her and that you'll be there for her. if she wants to talk about her cancer, don't avoid it. but if she doesn't want to talk about it, don't say anything. you being there for her is this best thing she needs.

Being a medical doctor, I have patients who have cancer or HIV, and when a freind tells me they have cancer, I tell them that they can always count on me day or night to be there for them. (Same for the patient). Plus all my patients and friends always get a professional hug.

My patients and all my friends are always in my daily prays.

Plus I usually inquire as to what stage, the type of cancer and the course of treatment they have decided to take with their personal doctor. If they say it is "terminal", I treat them like a normal person. Same if non-terminal.

If I am asked to help them over come the emotional stress of knowing their case is "terminal", then I work with them to help them deal with the trauma.

There is nothing you can really say....just let her know that she has your love and support. Let her know that you will be there for her and ask if there is anything you can do to help her at this time.

You put your arms around them, and tell them you'll be there for them...and then be there for them.
