It's a tomato hornworm - you must be in a pretty warm climate to have one this time of year. The blunt end - on the right in the photo - is the head. I suggest putting it back where you found it because that's where its food supply is.

Green Caterpillar With Red Horn

This is a tomato horn worm and they feed mainly on tomato plants. The horn end is the tail and when they start to change like a caterpillar does, they turn into a small moth.
Most people destroy these worms when they find them because they are very destructive to vegetable gardens.
It might be sluggish because he might be starting to change or he could be infected by the larvae of a wasp that is laid on the Tomato worm. The larvae of the wasp feeds on the worm from the inside until it turns into a wasp and the Tomato worm is dead.

I LOVE TOMATO WORMS!!!!!!!!!! I used to plant tomatoes every year with my dad and brother. I don't know why we stoped. Anyways, that's a tomato worm(not really a worm). The head is not where the horn is, its the opposite side. During the winter they burrow underground and spin a coo-coon. Later, in the spring, they come up out of the ground as these big gray mothes. They're really kool. Try keeping one in a tank with some dirt. Feed it tomato leaves every day and keep the dirt moist.

They do their cocoons underground and turn into these really large winged moths. I like them.
