my friend and i are students who need to travel to japan by the spring of 2009 to finish a project. the school will only cover half of the expense, leaving us to raise 3,000$. help! we both work and go to school, so there is no time to take another job, and rent is expensive. if there are any ideas as to how we can afford such a trip, they will help. thank you. help!!

Go door-to-door selling chocolate bars... that's what people at my school always did to raise money for trips. I don't know how well it pays off. Try to find a store that will sell you chocolate bars in bulk... like by the case. That way you can get them cheaper. Then sell them really expensive like $2 or $3 each.

Although best-case scenario you'll need to sell at least 1,000 chocolate bars each.

If you get together with a local charity maybe they will let them use your name. Say that you are raising money for your trip and also (X percent) goes towards whatever charity, people might be more inclined to help if you are donating part of it to the Cancer Society or something.

$3000 by spring of 2009 = $200/month = $50/week. I make that in 2 days delivering Pizza. You say rent is expensive. My response is, rent something cheaper. Unless you are living in a STUDIO apartment, something cheaper IS available. My even LESS popular advice is "If you can't find $50/week, you CAN'T afford the trip".
