just tape off all around the grille with masking tape and newspaper and go at it, you can primer it first if you want but I have painted chrome grilles before with no primer and just the black paint and have had no problem as long as it's clean and free of any wax.

All the answers that were given are great. You can remove the grille to paint it and would be the best thing to do just for ease of painting. If you choose to do it on the car, yes mask off everything...bad things do happen.
I restore old cars as a hobby and always prime first before paint. It really makes a difference when you apply you top coat. Remember not to thick. Many thin coats is best.
One thing that was missed and is very important cover the rad fins so you do not clog them with paint this will cause cooling problems later.
Hope this works for you.

remove the bumper...strip any paint that is on there..(not fully necessary)...otherwise u can get sand paper and lightly scratch the surface so as to give the primer and paint something better to grab hold of and stick...evenly apply the primer in a dust free environment...this is vital as excess dust sitting on the surface can be magnified after you put the colour on...on top of that it looks real **** if the enitre car is smooth and shiny and one part of the car has dust spots set in the paint.... be sure to wear a breathing apparatise for ur own health n safety...
allow to dry for a day or two then apply the paint in the same manner...a spray gun witha compressor is advisable for best results however u can use spray paint but it doesnt always spray evenly causing drips and uneven patches...
good luck...

Make sure it's clean and smooth, then mask around it with masking tape and paper, then spray paint it with a can of black bumper and trim paint. You can get these supplies at any auto parts store.

Next time you go to shoot paint ball, take the gun home with some black ammo and let the grill have it!

WHY TAKE IT OUT. YOU'LL SCRATCH IT PUTTING IT BACK IN. MASK OFF WITH PAPER AND SHOOT IN PLACE. USE AN ACRYLIC ENAMEL. FLAT FINISH.

SAVES A LOT OF TIME AND EFFORT.
