I have three BMW 3 series cars. The one we drive the least is the automatic, though they are equally fast. Honestly it is a matter of personal preference. A three series may be considered a luxury car but it is still sporty, especially the M3. If you are buying it for luxury alone, get the automatic. If you like the sportiness, get the manual. Stick: If you enjoy having a lot of control over the car the manual transmission is the way to go. A manual transmission is a big part of fully enjoying the driving experience, providing driving means more to you than just getting from point A to point B in style. Living in the suburbs makes the manual transmission more enjoyable because you do not need to row through the gears from stoplight to stoplight like you would in a tight city grid. Not that it is a burden in cities, especially with a six cylinder. Once you learn stick it becomes second nature and you don’t think about it. You just notice that you are more connected to your car’s actions. With a stick you will downshift before braking which extends the life of your brakes. Automatic: If you plan to eat, talk on your handheld phone or hold hands with your passenger while driving you will want an automatic. My wife sometimes likes the laid-back driving of the automatic. If the automatic is a steptronic transmission there is a setting that allows you to shift like a manual transmission, but it does not feel the same as a true stick and lacks the clutch so you can’t control engagement. Edit: In response to the rumors by incorrect posters, manual transmissions have the same power output and are equal regarding fuel efficiency. I have never had a problem with my automatic transmission shifting properly on hills, during passing or anything else, though you have more control with a manual. Ignore the people discussing price differences because they will happen both when you buy and sell.

All I have to say about that is this.
If I'd charged for all the times I went and picked up other instructors when they had their BMW's in the shop I'd made a lot of money. Adding that to the number of times I took them to the BMW dealership to get their BMW's out of the shop I'd made even more. Could almost made it into a full time taxi service it I'd been charging.

It depends on what you are buying it for, how much you have to spend etc...

Your question is a little bit vague, but I presume you are buying your first car. BMW is a very good make but it can be expensive to buy, run, insure etc.

As long as that's what you want, can afford the purchase price, can afford the insurance and have goo gobs of dough to maintain it with. The BMW's are the most expensive to maintain of any car out there. Even the batteries and wiper refills are non standard and have to be imported from Germany and the Germans have a Very high standard of living.

Depends on the model and year. add more details and you will get plenty of beneficial answers. Unfortunately, I wont be able to add more details to my answer later on. If we are talking about 2007/2008, then:

3 series - 335 yes, has power, and affordable
5 series - only motors with 300+ hp.
6 series - its nice, but might be redesigned in a few years
7 series - nice, but has lots of good competition
z series - very nice roadster, but will be redesigned very soon
x 3 - not a great fan of it.
x 5 - like it, great looks. porsche cayenne is nicer.
M series - love 'em all! best cars ever!
Alpina B7 - nice, maybe different wheels.

hope this helps!

Hell yeah you should buy a BMW. They are a bit pricey but if you take care of it, it'll take care of you.
