Have iPod on random play and the original Diamond Head version of Am I Evil came on.

It made me realise how much better the Metallica verison is (though a lot of this is down to the money Metallica can throw at the production costs compared to what Machine Head had)

So 2 Parts to his

1) Does anyone out there who knows both songs actually prefer the Original?

2) What covers of songs do you think are better than the originals?

Will be posting the opposite question in a minute,

"I Want Candy," Good Charlotte (the Strangeloves)

"Take Me to the River," Talking Heads (Al Green)

"Satisfaction," Cat Power (Rolling Stones)

"My Way," Sid Vicious (Frank Sinatra)

I really like all the remakes Marilyn Manson is doing. I burned the vids to play in my car.

Christina Aguilera did a good job on "car wash"
and moulin rouge song is good too

Brittney Spears with the "i love rock n roll" actually sounds better than the original.

knocking on heavens door by guns n roses was pretty good.

can't believe i picked Brittney for something but it is true. the girl can sing. and this was before all these problems she is having today

Covers that are better (in my opinion):

Hurt by Johnny Cash (originally by Nine Inch Nails)
Sweet Jane by the Cowboy Junkies (Originally by The Velvet Underground)
Take me to the River by the Talking Heads (Originally by Al Green)
(I can't Get No) Satisfaction by Devo (Originally by the Rolling Stones)
Mad World by Gary Jules (Originally by Tears for Fears)

Originals I prefer:
Come to Daddy by Aphex Twin (Covered by Dillinger Escape Plan)
Let's Lynch the Landlord by Dead Kennedys (Covered by L7)
That's all I can think of for now. My brain stopped working for me because it's quitting time at work.

i thinks it's pretty hard to find covers that are as good as the original. rasputina has cover album that is actually badass all the way thru which to me is kind of a miracle. they cover pink floyd, heart, led zeppelin, CCR, and several others and their covers are excellent and just as good as the originals.

also nada surf covered the pixies Where Is My Mind (which is the closing song for the movie Fight Club) and i believe their version is almost, but not quite as good as the original.

As far as covering songs goes, i think it's all fine and good, but too often "artists" botch songs or steal riffs from good songs and make them sounds awful. i found this happens most often with rap/r&b artists, pop singers (for example jessica simpson), and pop-rock bands.

as long as a talented band covers a song, then most often than not, they do a good job.
