Both of them are very much alive, and are far from retired. They just don't get a lot of the attention from tabloids and paparazzi because they are no longer young, and we live in a youth oriented society that prefers to hear more about the useless antics of 20-something female celebrities than about people of any age who are doing things that really make a difference in our lives.
The updates:
Talk show pioneer Phil Donahue is 72, lives in NYC and is still very much the political activist that will not back down to any conservative, as he demonstrated to Bill O'Reilly back in '05.
This year, Donahue served as Executive Producer for the feature documentary film, Body of War, which he also co-directed with independent filmmaker Ellen Spiro. The film tells the story of Tomas Young, a severely disabled Iraq War veteran and his turbulent postwar adjustments. The film features two new songs, No More and Long Nights by Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder. In November 2007 the film was named as one of fifteen to be in consideration for an Oscar nomination from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Donahue's spouse of nearly 28 years is actress Marlo Thomas.
The multitalented Dick Van Dyke is still rather youthful looking, although he just turned 82 years old this past Dec 13. He resides in Malibu, California and is still performing on stage, screen and on television. In 2006, he played the role of Cecil Fredericks in the movie Night at the Museum. He's also involved in a show called Murder 101: College Can Be Deadly which is showing on the Hallmark Channel. Van Dyke also does work with 3d computer animation.
When not performing, Van Dyke is active with the Presbyterian church, and he is also a philanthropist who participates in a lot of Los Angeles area events and charities. He was the MofC for the "From Malibu With Love" fundraiser held recently. His picture occasionally appears in the Malibu Times and Malibu Surfside News for some of his charity work. His longtime companion is actress Michelle Triola (formerly known as Michelle Triola Marvin, best known for the palimony lawsuit she filed against actor Lee Marvin back in the late 1970s.)
