The marriage papers don't mean much, the commitment to each other means everything.
However, there are certain legal ramifications that make marriage far more advantageous.
I prefer marriage.

The modern acceptance of unmarried people living together is a part of the reason that the divorce rate is so high nowadays. People live together thinking that they can decide whether they want to stay together for the rest of their life, but really all they're doing is living without commitment, ready to separate at the slightest hint of trouble. Then, when they finally do get married, nothing has changed; their commitment has not gotten any stronger. Then, as soon as hard times come along they divorce.

That all depends on the people in the relationship. The living together and then getting married is probably the largest group getting married these days. Some people feel like a marriage just complicates their relationship, but with more than half of all marriages ending in divorce. it is not thought of as that necessary.

i don't know if it is better to live together or get married that all depends on the individuals. some ppl have their relationships fall apart after marriage. i have been married for almost 30 yrs. and i have noticed that we have grown apart different interests and such. though is still love him it is more as a friend than a lover and husband. if i decide to get a divorce which i probably won't then you have a lot of legal stuff to go through. i like having the companionship of him here but we are merely roommates now.

You can NOT have a marriage without commitment. you can NOT live with someone without commitment. So is the paper the thing that binds? NO. Without commitment you nothing.

If a couple is really committed to each other, it shouldn't take that much more to sign the papers to prove they are.
There are also legal and economic benefits that come with marriage, like joint child support, social security, joint filing of tax returns, healthcare decision-making rights when the spouse in incompetent, etc.
So - let's ring those wedding bells!

considering the mockery that people make out of marriage these days it's safe to say that a piece of paper doesn't prove love or commitment..

I am currently going though a nasty divorce and have no aspirations to legally bind myself to someone again with a piece of paper. I firmly believe that a commitment to someone isn't material in nature, it is a bonding of feelings and emotions, of trust. I can live with just living with someone.

I have lived with my g/f (we are engaged) for 8 years. We are tying the knot next year. I don't think it really matters, we have just bought a house together and have decided that it's time to get married.
