there was two earth wires so i left one off , the light works fine but i have no power going to a light upstairs or the switch , is leaving this other earth wire off causing the prob

you should replace the wiring exactly as it was before. when you say earth if it was black in colour you have a ring main and you've disconnected the supply to the other fitting.
