I have a 1974 Holiday Rambler 1000 series 21ft travel trailer with a Suburban 16000 BTU forced air furnace. I have owned it since September, and I am living in it in a very cold climate. The heater has been on continuously for several days now, and this morning I awakened to the smell of burning rubber/plastic. I looked at the exhaust vent and there was a caked on black substance, It was very thick and brittle. I have not smelled or seen this before, and have turned off the furnace. I have a working carbon monoxide detector which has not gone off as well.

The belt is off the pulley or doesn't apply enough tension on the pulley and is slipping as is turns. Get a new one before it catches fire you. Time to grease the bearing on the blower wheel and check the tension of the belt.

I think you need to take the covers off & look inside.
My suspicion would be the air blower 'fan' & drive belt.
Something is over-heated & melted, it seems.
