They are afraid of isolating themselves from the Hispanic vote. Remember in 2004, Hill said she thought that people who are not citizens should be able to vote. They are also afraid of running out of people who want to be taken care of and can be easily manipulated.

What protest? Do you think elected officials come on Yahoo Answers?
I have never seen any protest of illegal immigration in the real world.

Mainly because the "protests" are coming from a tiny minority of people. The overwhelming majority of Americans simply want to reform the immigration system, with amnesty and a guest worker program. No one except these small fringe groups is running around "protesting" and bashing illegal immigrants. So--bottom line: no one is paying any attention to them.

In the past they have always been able to sneak legislation that protects illegals. But now that we're watching they are more careful. NY governor tried to pass law allowing illegals to get drivers licenses but had to pull back after public backlash. Hillary was asked if she supported him and she would not answer. They are both trying to get as many illegals in as they can and then find a way so the illegals can vote. The DL idea would have done that.

Because our elected officials enjoy the cheap labor illegals provide for the farms/factories our elected officials own. Our elected officials alo enjoy the low rates illegals charge to serve as: maids, chauffers, baby-sitters/nannys, cooks, gardeners, etc. Our elected officials are the number one employer of illegal aliens.

I honestly have no idea. It worries me almost as much that they won't listen to what we're telling them to do as the thought of who might come across in the flood. It may be completely political -- they want illegals to vote for them, "them" being in this case anyone who doesn't try to keep them out. There could be something more sinister going on behind the scenes; I honestly can't tell anymore.

Because they don't WANT to.
Commerce in our country depends upon this cheap labor force - always have depended upon it.
The only thing that has ever happened with regard to undocumented immigrants is Presidential amnesty. It will happen this time, too, right before Bush leaves office.

Because politicians are more interested in getting elected and staying in power than they are in actually doing what's best for their country.
They don't want to offend business people, who are addicted to cheap labour, and who fund their campaigns, and they don't want to offend minorities who might vote for them.

they have sold their souls in order to stay in power. remember, if you offend anyone or even say something that might offend someone (even someone who has broken our laws to be here), you will be smeared in the media. I believe the ACLU would call it hate-speech. Then comes Jesse. No one wants Jesse.
