Lots of good advice above for starting a business.
I've done importing before. You can get badly cheated and have no legal recourse, so be very, very careful!
Choose a bank in your area that is big and known for being involved in international trade. Companies overseas are less inclined to cheat people working with banks of this sort because it could cost them other and future business.
After you've chosen a bank, ask them to explain irrevocable international letters of credit. That's the missing link. After learning about this form of payment instrument, you should be able to understand how it all works.
I don't know your capital abilities ($$$) but if you can stick to propriatary containers (shipping containers that are full of your stuff only) you can pay a broker to watch it being loaded and he can lock it for you. He won't know if your product is good or defective, but he'll know if they're trying to load rocks instead of product. When you can afford it, send an employee over full time to watch production and test products.

I do not know how to go about purchasing items from overseas, yet I can help you to establish your business over the Internet. Many people are creating successful small businesses over the Internet via their personal websites. The program available at http://www.tobuildyour.com can assist you to build your business over the Internet with a very low cost. The program has done wonders for me. Just after two short months my website was receiving consistent targeted traffic for free. If you have any questions about starting up a website feel free to send me a message. I think it is great to see small businesses over the web. People are searching for the personal touch of a small business. You feel like you are dealing with real people and not just a website. I wish you the best in your journey and your business. I hope this helps to spark some ideas.
BEST WISHES & HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Have you considered perhaps doing direct sales? What is nice about the DS bizz is that you don't have to open a shop, hire employees, stock merchandise, etc., taxes are MUCH easier and there is a SUPER network for motivation and support. Since you set your own hours and days you want to work you can do it as a hobby, or as part/full time work to earn extra income along side your current work/activities. The investment is small and there are many to choose from. I recommend a product that is consumable, such as make-up, food, or candles; however, there many decor and jewelry companies that are outstanding as well. I also recommend sticking with a company that is well established and is a member of the DSA and/or DSWA. In addition, don't get sucked into registering with too many companies and splitting your focus/sales!! One (maybe two) is plenty and allows you to get higher sales in that one (two) company and receive override commissions and incentives. JMO!

I have 3 possible ideas that might work for you.
First - go to amazon.com, bn.com, etc, and search for a book on "how to start a small business". I'm sure that there are tons of them.
Second, go to some of the office supply stores, and look through their business software. There may be some that does the same thing as the book.
Finally, if you have a law school near you, see if they have a small business legal clinic there. A friend started a small business, and they walked him through all the paperwork and requirements he needed to meet to get his business registered with the state and feds, and what he needed to do for reporting, etc.
