My pc is losing time when i switch it off. most of my friends think the battery on the mobo needs changing. I want to know if this will cause any probs to my system.

Nope. The CMOS battery only helps in storing CMOS data for BIOS. As soon as you replace the battery, power ON PC then go into set up. Update time and date, load fail safe defaults, save and exit. You should be back in business in no time at all and with ALL your files and programs INTACT.

You will not lose any information as this has already been stored on your hard drive. so anything to do with the battery will not affect the info, in fact you could in theory remove the hard drive and, providing the other computer has the same operating system you can retrieve all your information. (obviously the programs that the files were saved on has to be installed also) in short go ahead and change the battery.

You can do this as your Data will be safe, the only items that the battery maintain are

The Date and Time, and other hardware settings. This information is probably set to defaults anyway
