Yes, they know they are dead.
Hopefully their spirit goes to heaven, and they no longer care about their corpse.
I believe that our past loved ones can be felt on occasion.

I've always wondered if suddenly you just cease to exist, or if we do get to see the world from beyond. My opinions change daily but I'd like to think that my spirit would be around.

I think your spirit lingers after death and you do see your body and things that happen after death. Beyond that who knows :)
