They do deliver on Saturdays just as they do on Monday to Friday. There's even talk of introducing Sunday delivery as the postal market in Germany has only recently been opened and what used to be a service offered by one company is now open to many competitors.

As for if and how long they will hold the mail,I'm sorry but I have no idea.

People are paying bills online. Instead of letters, people are sending e mails for free. Technology and unions are the enemies of the post office. They have already cut the post office hours in my little home town to 2 hours a day and 5 days a week. The post office is losing money and these are the solutions the postmaster general feels will help stop the bleeding. Many smaller post offices have stopped Saturday hours already. Anytime expenses are more than revenues then the company must go into what is loss minimization mode and cutting Saturday delivery is one way to do this. And it is favored by the postmaster general.
