It's called linea nigra
This is a dark, vertical line, up to a centimetre wide, that appears down the middle of your stomach, often crossing the navel. It tends to appear around the second trimester and is caused by pigmentation in the skin where your abdominal muscles stretch and slightly separate to accommodate your baby as it grows.

This line of pigmentation will fade within a few weeks of delivery, although you may need to give it a gentle rub to remove any dry skin. You will notice that other areas with pigmentation - such as your nipples, moles and freckles - may darken too but this will also fade with time.

The line on your pregnant belly is called the linea negra. This line is caused from hormones in your body. An old wives tale includes that this only happens to the mother of boys, but I'd personally have to disagree, being as I have five daughters and still had this line every time.

Typically it runs from your pubic bone to the top of your fundus, externally where your belly stops growing. It may be darker or lighter than others but is usually always present. It will fade after you give birth.

I have had 1 child and am about to have another one any day now. I am tall and skinny. I have never had that dark line and many many many women with different body shapes don't get it either. In fact there is a better chance that you may never even get it! I've only seen it on 1 person and she was having twins. Don't sweat it. Ask your doc for more info about it if ya still want a deeper explination about that line. Good Luck!!

It is called the linea nigra (black line). It is very common, and just caused by your hormones affecting your skin tone. You have probably noticed your nipples are larger and darker too. Some women get like a big freckle across the middle of the face too.

It all goes away once the baby is born.
