The main alternative-history everybody sees is WWII-driven, whether it be the Nazis winning and taking over Europe, or America becoming fascist because of similar influence.

What others do you all like?

I'd be interesting in reading novels on how history would've gone down had the CIA not been brought into existence, or how the world would be if China had democratized.

Harry Turtledove writes alternative history. Some of his writings can be far-fetched, but overall, the scenarios are pretty well thought out. For the most part, I like his writing.

I agree WWII alternate-history is pretty much played out. There a lots of good scenarios that I would love to see explored in novels.

What if the Aztecs (or Native Americans in general) had not been so vulnerable to smallpox? What if Napoleon had never invaded Russia? What if the Mongols had not pulled back from their invasion of Europe when Gengis Khan died? What if the Protestant Reformation had been crushed by the Inquisition? What if the Spanish Armada made it to England?

My favorite alternate history novel is '1632' by Eric Flint.

There was this battle between Muslims and the Europeans sometime around the turn of the first millenium. I can't remember the name, but I remember thinking that if the Europeans had lost, we would all be Muslims.

Or if Carthage had won the Punic Wars, that would drastically change the course of history in so many ways. Or if the Crusaders hadn't lost the Holy Land, would there be any wars in the East today? Or if the Roman Empire had never fallen, then what?

The British starting the fight of the American Revolution in the South destroying the institution of slavery. In the North the Americans come to terms with the Native American populations and enter into treaties which lead to a merging of those cultures.

The British are forces ultimately to admit defeat.
The Americans begin their new nation which includes to the rights of all people. Quite different than what we really started with.

Obviously, what if the Confederacy had won the Civil War.

What if Hannibal had advanced on Rome after the battle of Cannae and conquered the city?

What if Israel had been destroyed in 1948 by the Arab nations? How would modern history be different?
