So, we got a whole house humidifier and was told we do not need to clean/maintain it except once a year by calling our heating company and they will clean it and replace the filter. All we have to do is shut it off once we shut off the furnace. But in the humidifers pamplhet it says it should be cleaned every 1-3 months? Everyone i have talked to just has their heating company take care of it once a year and I have been told by two different HVAC companies the same thing. So, now i am confused . What do you do?

I do have hard water, but the company knows this...

Also, wondering if you don't clean it and it gets clogged does mold or bacteria form?

It mostly depends on your water.
If it is soft and doesn't have any rust, you should be good for a year.
Hard water will leave deposits that will need more frequent servicing.

With hard water, you need to inspect it probably once a month. Calcium/mineral deposits can cling to parts and also clog the filter earlier than soft water. If it has a float for filling with water, this is where the major problem starts. The float fails to open so no water enters the humidifier.

We clean ours annually. However if you have hard water, it will get calcium build up so you may have to soak in vinegar or use CLR.
