right now i have a 1.5g fish tank and it has a cave and 2 fake plants a filter a light and some gravel. i have one male betta in it. i am thinking about adding a new pet to it. does that sound like a bad idea? i want to add like a platy or something like that. maybe an african dwarf frog. any good suggestions?

the betta should be ok but you cant add anything else african dwarf frogs would fit for 1 or 2 but they woulrd eat your betta so id just stick with the betta and your not a bad pet owner its good thing your asking before you do anything i know people who just do it then ask those are the bad pet owners

Well, IMO you or your mom should bring this tank back and exchange it for at least a 2.5 gallon tank or even a 5 gallon tank
I have been in a bunch of stores in the past week and i have seen the pricing on these tanks
the smaller ones are more expensive then the bigger ones
you can get a 5 gallon tank with filter already for $30
whereas you pay already for a 1.5 gallon tank a good $25
It's great that you at least upgraded your betta to a bit bigger tank
but that would be my advice
i wouldn't add more then a mystery snail in this small tank though
Hope that helps
Good luck

If you get anything, get a mystery snail.Your tank is too small for another fish or a frog.
edit: 1.5 gallons is not to small for a Beta. All these people who say it is are misinformed and ignorant.Adding anything but 1 snail would not be good.It is too small for anything else. With that said,a bigger tank would be better, but not necessary.
People come here to get answers, not to be harassed.Keeping 1 Beta in this tank does not make you a "bad pet owner."The person who said that is wrong,as well as all the others who suggested it,but didn't actually say it.

I'm sorry but that tank is really to small for anything. You would do better with a 5 or 10 gallon tank.

OI!!! People are trying to help you! Listen to them! Believe it or not - they know more than you do - or else they (hopefully) wouldn't be answering your question!
A 1.5 gallon tank is far too small - accept it! You need a 5 gallon tank MINIMUM! Even the betta will be cramped in there.
I don't care about you - or your mom! I just care about a fish that's being kept in a tank that's far too small for it! 1.5 gallons is a vase, a jug or a joke - but NOT a fishtank!

tanks of that size are really not good for anything except for making a quick a buck for the companies who make them
if you don't want to upgrade at all at least leave the betta ALONE and when he dies throw the tank out or stick some soil in there and use it for a plant because that tank if way too small for ANYTHING even hermit crabs (10 gallons at least) but please don't stick any other animal in there, it will suffer

you are a bad pet owner, if you don't have the money to properly care for it you shouldn't buy it. "just fine" means cutting his lifespan at least in half, making him weak and cold, and more susceptible to disease. I don't understand people, if you don't have the money (no matter if it's giving "just a fish" a big enough home or being able to get your cat spayed) DON'T GET IT.
anyway... so how much did your mom pay for this? because for $10 she could have gotten at 10gallon, 5gallon, or 2.5gallon tank.
