Venus fly traps don't need to ingest much through the heads; the directions on my son's said it only needed protein this way a few times a month.

Here's a website that tells you all you need to know:

You don't need to "feed" a flytrap, contrary to popular opinion. Just give it a good, balanced fertilizer like any other house plant (I prefer liquid fertilizer for these plants), and it will be fine. The "traps" are simply modified leaves; they will stay open if nothing triggers them to close. A trap will only close a certain number of times, and only if something comes into contact with at least two hairs at once (a natural adaptation to prevent false alarms). Keep it in a very humid environment (terrariums are great!), feed it with a continuous-feed solution (quarter-strength solution at each watering), and it should do just fine. It will need lots of light if you want it to bloom, but it can be perfectly healthy without blooming.

Enjoy!

Yes it is okay that there are a couple of leaves still that are healthy and it hasn't ate for a while so i would not give it food because this time of the year it will kill it because where it is native which is north and south carolina in the us it snows there and they are in fields and wild and there are no bugs there until spring so yeah it will not need any bugs until spring and make sure to give it distiled water and no fertilizer of any kind because it will kill it the bugs are its fertilizer. It does not need to be fertilized by the bugs this time of year.

We have them growing wild and they are not feeding because the temperatures are to low for it to feed
