I want to get a wireless printer -- is it possible to have it upstairs when the modem/router are downstairs? I have a wireless internet, but do I need to set up a wireless network in order for the printer to work? I'd like my laptop to be able to connect to the wireless printer (and keep the printer upstairs) even though my desktop is downstairs.

Thanks for the help!

As long as the wireless signal can travel from the router to the printer, you can put the printer whereever you want to.

If you're able to use the laptop upstairs and get a wireless signal from the desktop downstairs, the printer should work up there, too.

Hello ,
Yes . I have a wireless Printer and of course a Linksys Wireless router . I have a 2 story home and the PC and Router is in the lower/basement level , the Printer is on 2nd floor . Work great everytime all the time . Hewlitt Packard . Linksys make the best Routers . You will need to select the Printer to work Wireless when you run the wizard . The wizard will pop up when needed after you insert the CD Printer Driver . Here the hitch ... you should select to manualy type in the printer even though the wizard tell you it has found the Printer . The attempt to successfuly install the Printer as Wireless may take a while . Keep at it .

Briefly, a wireless printer is like any other printer, except that it has a built-in print server for making network connections. It is treated by a wireless network as a network resource, with no other equipment (except a router and at least one computer) needed. All you need to know is the printer's IP Address when it is connecting to the network. Any network-enabled computer should be able to connect to the printer, if both the printer and the computer are within wireless range of the router. The modem is used to connect to the Internet, and is not involved in using the printer. So, yes, you do need a network, but the printer and your computers can be anywhere within wireless range.

Yes you need to be able to connect the printer to your wireless router. the router then directs the traffic between your laptop and the printer..you will need to set upa home network and enable file and print sharing.

You simply need to give it the correct information for connecting to your wireless. Always set it's IP address manually to a coup[le of numbers higher than your router's upper dhcp address range. You install the software locally, then it will ask for the address of the machine.
