how exactly did the US 1980 hockey team beat the soviets? they should have lost by 10 goals!! it's not like they were more of a team or had worked harder. How did the US win? the USSR had the best goalie in the world, the best center, the best coach and were undefeated in the Olympics since the 64. so how did they do it?

This is the best example I can think of a group of people wanting something so bad, and doing everything they can to make it happen.

On a side note..........the 1980 US Olympic team has the highest percentage of players (13/20) who went on to play in the NHL of any Olympic hockey squad prior to 1998.

That alone says somethintg about how truly amazing that American team was. When taking into account the NHL careers that Kenneth Morrow, Neal Broten, Michael Ramsey, Mark Johnson and David Christian had, the miracle may not have been as much as miracle as we have been led to believe.because when it comes right down to it, from top to bottom, that is one of the best assembled teams anytime anywhere!

Well simply, they scored more goals in the game at the olympics then the Soviets did so that is how the beat them, you score more ponts then the team that you are playing. Now I bet that you are forgetting that 13 days before the Miracle on Ice game, these 2 teams met at Madison Square Gardan, in which they lost to the Soviets 10-3. And I beat almost anybody that watched the game, either on TV, or in person, would not have believed that almost 2 weeks later, that the United States would play Souivet Union in Round 1, and game #1 of the Medal Round, or that they could beat the team. And plus I bet the turning pooint in the game for the United States came after the first intermisson when coach Viktor Tikhonov benched Vladislav Tretiak with Vladimir Myshkin. Which is a move I bet nobody thought would have been made. And you can read of the game at the site that I have down. And you might want to watch the movie "Miracle" with Kurt Russell. In which you can see how Herb Brooks put together the hockey team that went to the 1980 Olympics, and there is changes that happened in the story, as well as other movies that are supposed to be "based on a true story". So you might want to put this movie on your list of movies to see in the new year.

First, the Russian coachwas arrogant. He pulled his goalie after the first period. Second, the US kids were in incredible shape and able to keep fresh legs out their in the 3rd period. Also Eruzione's goal was a nice shot, but it could be called a cheap one. Don't forget Jim Craig stood on his head for 60 minutes. Also, a week or so earlier the Russians had blown the Americans away and might have been looking past them.

by scoring more goals then the other team. the US wanted that game sooo bad and the soviets hadent lost since 64 so were probably a little overconfident and didnt know what to do when they were pressed. I think pulling Tretak was a stupid move too. If he stays in the net it might have been a different story.

The Soviets didn't loook at them as s serious threat. Big mistake. Watch the documentry on HBO if u can find it. Remember that goal that was scored at the end of the first? The Soviets fell asleep and the US player skated hard and scored with a second left!!! Prime example of how they thought of the US team. And that memorable shot of theSoviet player looking in awe as the US celebrated. Everyone knows that one. Priceless.

I wonder, was the Sovient team so succesful back in the day because if they lost, their families were going to get sent to a gulag in siberia? That would be very motivating.

From the looks on the USSR players' faces at the end of that game, that would seem to be a possibility.

Kurt Russell was an amazing coach! LOL

Seriously, the Russians were overconfident and the Americans outhustled them. In a warm-up game at MSG, CCCP creamed USA without breaking a sweat! They were looking ahead to the Gold metal game and it showed.

The US scored some shocking goals, most surprisingly was the one at the buzzer to end the 1st. Jim Craig stood on his head that last 10 minutes to seal the victory!
