I suspect although it's blamed on the Christian religion, a more likely candidate would be the Victorian chattering classes as to the best of my knowledge there's nothing in biblical texts about this.
As for why - they seemed to think everything was a sin especially for the lower classes to be engaging in such things, regardless of what the gentry were up to. It's all about control basically. Not aware that this is a theory in most of Europe for example.
It is easy to check, except at 14 would you want to risk it? :-)

It's funny to see you asking this because I've always thought it only applied to men because I've only ever heard it in that context.
I remember in my late teens hearing, for the first time, a girl talking about masturbating and I was both shocked and captivated to learn they did it too LOL. Although the method of choice for this young lady involved the bathtub water spout instead of her hands...so does that mean hair grew on the faucet instead?

Certainly, it had to be a religious freak who came up with such a morbid concept as "Everytime you masturbate, a kitten dies somewhere in the world." Eee - gads.

religious fanatics had really good imaginations to come up with these fallacies to prevent their kids from masturbating. Its a religious belief that guys should not waste their seed as its a sin to do this hence they are not supposed to masturbate!

And your question is equally as silly.
These warnings were concocted by the same ilk who came up with the boogey man under the bed 'theory'...and the "if you lie your tongue will fall off" 'theory'.
Gee, why would anyone SAY those things when they are so easily checked???
How about to stop people from doing it....
Parents want to keep kids in their beds, religious types want to keep people from doing various things that are deemed bad.....

Probably originated during the victorian age - I believe that was when sexuality was being supressed.
