I know plenty of things I could get him that he could use here at home, but what can I get him that he'll be able to take with him and use in Iraq? It needs to be relatively small and it'll need to be useful or something like that. Thanks everyone!

My fiance came home from Iraq about a year and a half ago. I would say the most important thing that he took with him was pictures. I made him a scrapbook of us throughout the years. You could make one of your family and include funny sayings about the pictures. The the end you could write a little note/letter to him. I also sent pictures all of the time so my fiance decorated his room with them. During tough days the pictures will remind him of what he will be coming home too.

Also while my fiance was gone I sent him a bunch of care packages, making sure I sent at least one for all of the major holidays. Every box I send I decorated. I also decorated the boxes according to the holiday. If there wasn't a holiday, I'd decorate it with whatever I could think of For Christmas I covered the box in red paper, cut out Christmas trees and decorated them with "decorations." I also made presents and a Santa with a sled. I made all of these out of construction paper and glued them to the sides of the box. Just make sure the return and sending addresses are clear. This way he can pick out the box easily and it shows him he is "extra loved."

Hope this helps. Tell him to be safe and come home soon!

OMG I was going to say exactly what Steve said. Hey thanks Steve.

There is truly nothing more important than your dad looking a recent photo of you all, the ones he holds closest to his heart.

I would also talk to your dad. Ask him what he does during any "down time". maybe a cute deck of cards with naked women on them...just kidding....all the other guys would love that.

My daughter was in the military and stationed overseas. I sent her care packages all the time. I also sent homemade cookies and her special little treats she like knowing she couldn't get them where she was

So by talking to him without coming out and asking him, you show an interest in what he does when he's not on duty while you are still fishing for ideas on what he can't get there.

Even if the picture is all of you standing in front of the Christmas tree, it would be nice for him to have.

Don't forget about the deck of cards, they don't have to have naked ladies on them, but I thought that was cute...

Have a wonderful Christmas with having your father home and God Bless you all... ~

Maybe try talking to your mom, about going out and doing some family photos of you and her or whomever. And get them done at a photo place and give him a few when he leaves, so he'll always have a good picture of the ones he loves. God speed to your dad man.

I-Pod and an I-Tunes gift card!
If you know his taste, you can load his I-Pod up in advance.
