Torque has dimensions of force times distance and the SI units of torque are stated as "newton metres" (Nm).[2]
Torque is part of the basic specification of an engine: the power output of an engine is expressed as its torque multiplied by its rotational speed. Internal-combustion engines produce useful torque only over a limited range of rotational speeds (typically from around 1,000–6,000 rpm for a small car). The varying torque output over that range can be measured with a dynamometer, and shown as a torque curve. The peak of that torque curve usually occurs somewhat below the overall power peak. The torque peak cannot, by definition, appear at higher rpm than the power peak.
USA measures in Foot Pounds. Troque is also aplied to bolts to ensure correct tightness with a torque wrench
I think your question about 8V and 16V is about cylinder heads. All cylinders have at least two vales- One intake and one exhaust. 4 cyl have 8v and if you have two of each then you have a 16V. some Audi's have 3 exhaust and two intakes and make a 20V 4 cyl engine.

Torque is the capacity to pull or tug.
Valves are cylinders in the engine that give the thrust.
V4 is slower than V8, less pick up but consumes less fuel.
Only sports or high end cars will have V8 engines.
Some cars have V12 too, like Mercedes-Benz S600

torque is pick up and horse power is maximum m capacity speed 6 valves means 6 cylinders spining togethor to move your wheeles instead of 4 its the same with 16 so 16v engine would have aloota valves and aloota power

In simple terms , i would answer :-
Torque in automobile as the power of its speed of rotation ; the power with which " a car can accelerate ".
V8 or V16 engine means an 8 cylinder or 16 cylinder engine . From d letter "v " itself one gets an idea that the shape of the engine is V; and if its an V8 that means 4 cylinders on either side which makes it an total of a 8 cylinder engine .

Torque has to do with acceleration, mass and force and in vehicle engines is how to power of the engine is transmitted to the wheels. It is really complicated and gives me a bit of a headache so see more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torque
As for V8 and V!6, the numbers 8 and 18 indicate the number of cylinders. A V8 has 4 on each side of a shared crank shaft and they are basically 2 4 cylinder engines on one unit. A V12, on the other hand is on a flat plane and so functions as a single engine with twice the power of a V6 and has the ability to be made of better because it reduces vibration and can be made much lighter than a V8. V12's are better at producing torque because their shape requires less energy to create a positive output.

Torque it the twisting / spinning force. When you are putting on or off a nut using a wrench, you are applying torque. Of course the higher the torque the more "power" the engine has. A locomotive engine has incredible torque but can't accelerate very fast.
HP is some what related to torque. But it is just calculated from the torque number and RPM.
http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Miscellaneous/TorqueHPSpeed.htm
http://www.vettenet.org/torquehp.html
simply put HP = (torque * RPM) / 5252.
===
Usually torque has more relavance at stand still (like the way train locomotive "pulls"). Then the HP number has more relavance at higher speed (because of gearing of the transmission).
===
The 16 valve just says that it has more valves per cylinder for easier breathing. Just like you and me, it the engine can not breath, then it can create power.
Good Luck.

It is written as 8V, 16V, 32V etc. Any numeric before 'V' represent the valves and after 'V' represent the No: of cylinders in V shape engine.
Usually 16V in a 4-cyl, engine is common and represents the NO of valves in an engine. More valves aloe more air/fuel mixture to enter and more exhaust gas to exit faster. Its like You are walking and you need less O2. So one nose will do. But when you are running and you need more O2, then you need both holes of the nose open to let more air in. Same goes with the engine.
Torque is the twisting force and it is the power you need to move or pull or carry something. If you see, Sport cars got more BHP than heavy trucks. But it doest mean that a car can pull any load that a truck can.

Torque is the measure of twist force in a shaft. A steam engine has huge torque at low speed. Most gas engines get their maximum torque at fairly high speed. Torque translates to force on the wheels, so too much will spin the wheels. Horsepower is torque applied over a distance to result in speed against air resistance.
V8 and V16 (and bigger) engines work on the idea that a whole bunch of small cylinders can move faster than a few big ones that have to stop at the end of each stroke. V means the cylinders are in two banks (sides) with a crank shaft at the bottom to which all cylinders are attached.
When you see that a car has a 32 valve V8, it means that each cylinder has 4 valves in it. Every 4 cycle engine must have at least two valves - intake and exhaust. But there is a limit to how much of the head can be occupied by two round valves (valves are round for better life, etc.) Putting 4 valves means more of the head can be opened, thus allowing more air/gas mixture to get in or more exhaust to get out in the few milliseconds they are open on each stroke.
It is possible to build a multivalve engine where some don't work at low speeds for more efficiency and all open at high speed for more thru-put.
