Surface done in Minwax Poly shades - want to break the sealer to be able to stain over it -- will the liquid sand work for that and not distort the results of the new stain?

I don't think it will work, you need to break the sealer, ie.manually by sanding, or strip it,try your way on a small section or somewhere it will not be seen. The Min-wax is a two jobs in one deal, sealer, and stain in one can, not my preference, never the less I don't think your method will get the results your looking for ...go old school, sand it,stain it, seal it(poly, laquer, varnish, etc.

It probably will work but you wont'get the stain color that you want and unless you do a fantastic job,the color wont'be even.
To get better results sand down to the bare wood and re-stain.
Minwax poly shades is great if you are not a professional in using dyes.

Depending on how thick it is, I doublt if the new stain will penetrate the polyshades. You'll probably have to sand it all back and restain it to your liking. I've never specifically tried what your attempting though so I may be wrong. If it doesn't work, you can always just sand it back completely the redo the stain.
