It would only be logical that human ancestors ate meat as well as plants. Chimpanzees are closely related to humans and they kill and eat monkeys. Humans may have been carrion eaters or caught rodents and ate them before they learned to kill bigger game.

As humans moved from being quadrupeds to bipeds, their diet changed. Their new found ability to use their "hands" allowed them to make tools and capture prey.

This resulted in an increase in the amount of protein in the diet which then allowed for the development of a larger brain (Australopithecus had about a 300 cc cranial cavity, homo sapien is about 1350 cc).
