I had a 1997 grand prix the transmission died about 8 months ago. I had a used transmission installed for around $1,200 which only lasted 8 months. Is the auto mechanic responsible for fixing the transmission since his work lasted less then a year. This took place in the state of NH.

The mechanic just installed the tranny, and since it is a used tranny the junk yard can be held responsible if you bought the warrant on it.

Most work done with used parts will not be warrantied for that long a period. The only warranty would be that (a) the work was done correctly (b) he didn't re-install the bad tranny he removed.

In another word he (the mechanic) had no idea the real condition of the used tranny. This is one of the reason why mechanic tried the most expensive options first (using new parts). Even if he has to do the work again, at least he made enough money to make it worth while. And using new parts he doesn't accused of cheating the customer.

===

But he should have used at least a re-built parts.

Good Luck

The auto mechanic only installed the transmission. How can he guarantee a used transmission?
Now if you have it in writing that he has a guarantee on that used transmission you are covered.
But even most people will not guarantee a used part on a car for no more than 30 days.
He may give you a discount on a replacement or even perhaps install it for free. (but i do not think so)

First of all understand that in the world of auto repair transmission repair joints are at the top of the ladder for conning and scamming the customers....who knows what parts they put in your car??? Would you even know what they looked like, more than likely no......trans con artists know this and you are at their mercy. Did you get a written warranty for this trans? If you didnt shame on you for being pathetically stupid......was this mechanic licensed with your state....demand he fix it again...if not call the NH DMV and write a complaint about him......next thing, never, and I mean never do business deals with friends and relatives....it almost always backfires and you are stuck!!!!!! Next and last thing, contact your DMV and they will tell you which transmission joints are most reliable and which ones they have had complaints about.....use your head a little more in the future!!!!!

No. The shop is not responsible to repair.If you have a writtin warranty for a year that is different.
At most you had a 90 days due to the fact it was a used unit.
And you also paid to much for this repair.Shop around.A used transmission can be found for about 250-400.The labor is about the same.

No sorry but used parts dont carry a long warranty most about 30 days, and also i hate to tell you this but it shouldnt cost you but maybe $300 more to have it rebuilt depending where you live I've worked in a great trans shop for yrs and they only charge around $1200.00 (4 a rebuild) for that type car and thats NOT used parts, Good Luck

no you took the risk of installing a used one instead of new and since you installed a used one in the first place that means the first one had already gone out so why would you get a used transmission for the same peice of crap car thats the worst car to carry the gm stamp on it
