Unless the baby has/develops allergies you can eat pretty much anything. You should avoid too much caffeine and obviously alcohol, smoking or any drugs/medication - read the packets before taking anything or ask your doctor, just like when pregnant. It all goes into the milk.

If it was safe to eat during pregnancy, it's safe to eat while breastfeeding. There is some school of thought that if your family is prone to allergies that you should avoid allergen type foods, but it may not have any effect.

Your best bet is to bookmark La Leche League. They will give you the most accurate and tested information on breastfeeding.

See if the hospital where you deliver has a lactation specialist and get a pre delivery appointment. She (yes they are she's) will take a family history and talk with you about all of the aspects of breastfeeding. Once you have the baby you will have other things on your mind.

This is a hard one since some babies will react to certain foods differently. My son never had any problems with anything I ate, including beans, brocolli, etc. You just have to try them and see what happens. If your baby becomes extra fussy or gassy after you've eaten some brocolli, then you'll know that it probably upset his/her tummy.

just think of this way whatever you eat it goes into your breast milk. It's the same as being pregnant. If you eat spicy food your milk is going to have a taste of it too. That's why whenever you get a Rx your doc will ask you if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Whatever you take in your baby is going to take in too.
