My favorite sweater coat from the Gap got destroyed and since I knit I was hoping to find a pattern for one. It was a longer sweater and had a hood (it also had a pom-pom on top of the hood but I don't absolutely have to have that), and it also had buttons on it, and it tied in the middle as well (but that's also optional. Does anyone know of a pattern out there either for free or one I could buy? Thanks in advance.

Try this link. I'v been getting my sweater patterns from marymaxim for years. They are a catalogue mail order co and are very reliable. you can order a free catalogue from their web site or see it on line. Below is a fee pattern site.

Can only suggest that you design your own pattern if you can't find what you are looking for. There is a free design program called sweaters available at

www.greatknitdesigns.com

I use this often as it allows me to design and print my own patterns for any size, style and shape, and also for any yarn that I may have collected over the years but cannot find a pattern for.

I recommend this software often on this site as I think it is brilliant for designing patterns for hard to fit shapes and sizes and also for the more creative aspect of knitting/crochet.

http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter04/PATTmariah.html -- you could make this one longer and use buttons if you'd like
http://www.knitty.com/issuesummer05/PATThardcore.html -- I think this one sounds like what you're describing...and you could leave off the design on the back, but with some nice yarn, I think you could make this one beautiful.
Those are two that come to mind...I love knitty.com. Perhaps www.ravelry.com would have some fantastic suggestions for you too.
Good luck & happy knitting !

you can take any free jacket pattern and just add some length to the body.
