It depends which kind of music you prefer obviously =]
I have played both, and I prefer the sound of the guitar because I like rock music. Although I think that playing the violin beforehand has helped me with the fingering.
But to be honest, I think that can work either way round.

I think you can probably get further with a guitar, more bands need guitarists than violinists.
Playing guitar also had wider options, so I'd recommend guitar.

But if you like to listen to classical music more than any other type of music, then maybe violin is for you.
Personal choice really =]
Good luck x

the violin is used by so many rock artists today. there are plenty of guitarists in the world and there wont ever be a void for that job. violinists are not just confined to classical music. what about wilco and arcade fire? these two bands use the violin on various songs. look, i would support either decision and its ultimately up to you, but the violin is a beautiful and awesome instrument to which young people ignore. i say give it a shot.

That's a very personal choice. A person who would lean towards classical music, would probably prefer the violin. You have to start young if you want to learn the violin. You have to decide how you're going to apply your choice of instrument - do you want to play in an orchestra or a band, etc.

learn the violin first this will help you to learn finger control
then if you feel ambitious switch to the guitar both are different but if you can play the violin it will help you when you decide to pick up the guitar, musical theory progression time signatures stuff like that either way you will have fun

they're two totally different instruments. It all depends on what kind of music you want to play, like the people above said. Personally, I prefer violins.

My daughter found herself in a similar situation. She was trying to decide between the cello and the guitar. She chose cello and took to it so much that she doesn't even like playing guitar now.
