Astronauts have in fact seen UFO's ...but its important to understand that an UFO is nothing more than something unknown flying around, which in case of the apollo program turns out to be some debris getting loose from the capsule or a burned out rocket stage and stuff like that.
The missions had been cancelled because it was very expensive to go there in order to what they produced in science findings.
Then of course it was a race against russia, which made the whole afford useless by winning.
So that's why it was cancelled.
About UFO's and Aliens.. well it was true that there were some 'crypted' messages between Houston and the Astronauts for the simple reason that its not very cool if everybody gets aware about this and that malfunction on bord.
One may view interviews with former Astronauts ...its very interesting how adventurous the whole thing was, and what sort of crappy technology was in use at that time.
So this is why they sometimes reported things in a coded manner ..
especially when they looked out and saw some ice from the vehicle floating out there unable to exactly identifying what they saw .. 'Theres a bogie' .. yep ... there were multiple unexpected sightings, but all are somewhat explainable after flying hundreds of times up there

I get really angry when I read that the Apollo missions were cancelled because there was nothing more to learn about the Moon. That couldn't be farther from the truth. Apollo 17 was the FIRST Apollo mission with a professional scientist on board, and the scientific world was really looking forward to the following missions. Then the damned politicians cancelled the program because of lack of public interest. Naturally, when things start getting scientific, the average American loses interest, as Americans have been shown in a recent OECD study to have mediocre scientific education.

No, not at all. The Apollo program was extremely expensive, and given that the American public was losing interest in yet another moon landing, there was no overriding reason for the government to continue the program. Keep in mind that the United States was involved in a costly war in Vietnam, and the Johnson administration had an ambitious set of domestic spending initiatives, and there just wasn't any more money or political will to continue the Apollo program. Let's look for the real reasons...money, war, politicians...not UFOs and aliens.
And... well said Geoff G (above)

I have not heard of any thing like that before. It is quite ridiculous to assume that NASA canceled their missions because of UFO's. More likely, if we saw UFO's, we would have continued sending missions to the moon. The space enthusiasm of Americans just dwindled in the 70's, plus the Vietnam War was going on, and it put a strain on our national budget.

I personally remember watching one of the televised broadcasts from the moon back then, I was a teen-ager then. I distinctly heard one of the astronauts saying they saw something on the moon that was metallic and such. The description led anyone who heard it to know it was not from Earth. Mission control responded with a cryptic message obviously telling the astronauts to clam up about it. I am a devout Christian and would swear on a stack of Bibles on it. There was no mistake that they did see something. I just don't remember which mission it was.

No
Having won the race to the Moon, and wanting to turn to the Shuttle program and to Skylab, they cut the Apollo budget so much that NASA had to stop the Apollo program, cancelling Apollo 18 to 20.
The money went to the shuttle development.
The Saturn V rockets went to launch the building blocks of Skylab.

The Apollo missions were curtailed due to lack of funding...
And that's the ONLY reason.
