The Large Hadron Collide will accelerate hydrogen atoms to near the speed of light (yes light not sound). The protons will then be collided and scientists will look for particles that collided head on leading to the formation of smaller and strange objects such as the higgs or quarks etc.

It will be functional in May 2008.

The LHC is a particle accelerator based in Switzserland's CERN. It stands for te large hadron collider and is a 27km circle 100m beneath the ground which uses superconducting magnets to accelerate particles to nearly the speed of sound.

They hope to create antimatter in the form of antihydrogen and antihelium. As well as trying to find other small particles.
