About 21% of the total area of Africa consists of desert land.
The exact percentage is not a fixed value, because of the constant advance (and sometimes retreat) of the deserts, due to deforestation, soil degradation, erosion etc.
By my calculations the African desert area is approximately 6266092 kilometres squared.
Divide the desert area by the total area of Africa, which is approximately 30221532 kilometres squared, and then times the answer by 100 to get 20.73 %( that is the desert land area of Africa).
It also depends on what your personal conception of a desert is e.g. only sandy desert, or just arid terrain in general.
In this case, I worked out the areas with less than an average of 250 millimetres of annual precipitation.

Africa has three popular deserts
Sahara – the world's largest hot desert, in northern Africa
Kalahari – a desert in southern Africa
Namib – a desert located primarily in Namibia
they cover in all 9,950,000 sq km of area
Africa is of 30,221,532 sq km
therefore 32% of africa is covered by desert
