Assassination is a form of killing someone who is power to make decisions and have a great influence.

Julius Caesar, JFK, Martin Luther King Jr., William McKinley, etc were all presidents, leaders, and in the power to influence and push decisions.

Murders are just being killed. Even if their is a motive, if the person was not in power, it is not an assassination.

The word assassination was actually made up by William Shakespeare while writing the play Julius Caesar. So that's part of the reason why it's only used to for "famous" people.

Regular people aren't important enough to be assassinated.

Seriously, the original assassins were a religious cult controlled by one man. They killed only on orders.

Even though a large number of assassinations have been accomplished by unbalanced people with no organization behind them, that's not normal. Most assassinations are to order and well thought out. They differ from murder that way. Only pre-meditated murder can be compared to assassination.

Personally, I use the word murder where others use the word assassination. I believe it elevates the status of the killer by making the act a political statement.

The people who are assassinated are already thought of as great men and women, why reward their killers?
